WILLIAM DEWALD,

a witness called and sworn on behalf of the People, was examined in chief by Mr. Walker, and testified as follows:

Q What is your name?

A William Dewald.

Q Where were you on the night of, May 4th?

A The first company.

Q Which rank?

A The rear rank.

Q Lieut. Steele's Company?

A Yes sir.

Q Which man?

A The third man.

Q From the east?

A Yes sir.

Q Were you there when the bomb was thrown?

A Yes sir.

Q Before the bomb was thrown there did you have anything shining in your hand, club, revolver or anything else?

A No sir.

Q Who stood at your left, the next man to you, the officer here?

A Yes sir.

Q He is here?

A Yes, right there.

Q Hanley?

A Officer Hanley.
