Attended a Carpenters' Union meeting at Timmerhoff's Hall where George Engel gave a speech. Q IN APRIL LAST WERE YOU A MEMBER OF THE CARPENTERS' UNION, THE INDEPENDENT CARPENTERS UNION?

A YES.

A NO.

A YES, I WAS PRESIDENT FOR A YEAR AND A HALF.

A IT WAS A YEAR LAST CHRISTMAS.

Q DO YOU KNOW THE DEFENDANT, MR. ENGEL?

A YES SIR, I KNOW HOW SO FAR AS I HAVE TALKED AND SPOKEN WITH HIM, ONCE.

Q DID YOU ATTEND THE MASS MEETING OF SUNDAY AFTERNOONS LAST WINTER?

A SOME OF THEM.

Q WHERE WERE THEY HELD?

A IN TAHLIA HALL. THERE WERE TWO IN TAHLIA HALL, AND THE REST IN TIMOROTH'S HALL.

Q WHAT IS THE NUMBER ON MILWAUKEE AVENUE?

A TIMOROTH'S HALL IS 701,. TAHLIA HALL IS 676 AND TIMOROTH'S HALL IS FURTHER UP CORNER OF NOBLE ST.

Q DID YOU ATTEND SOME SUNDAY AFTERNOON MEETING AT TIMOROTH'S HALL?

A YES.

Q DID YOU ATTEND THE MEETING LAST SPRING AT WHICH MR. ENGEL SPOKE?

A YES SIR, I VISITED IT; I HAD INVITED MR. ENGEL MYSELF.

Q DID MR. ENGEL EVER SPEAK MORE THAN ONCE AT THAT HALL LAST SUNDAY TO YOUR KNOWLEDGE?

A NOT THAT I KNOW EXACTLY. IT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE, BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER NOW PRECISELY.

Q DID YOU HEAR MR. ENGEL'S SPEECH ON THE OCCASION OF YOUR INVITING HIM TO SPEAK?

A YES.

Q DID HE SPEAK IN GERMAN?

A YES.

Q NOW, IN THAT SPEECH DID MR. ENGEL SAY ANYTHING ABOUT SAVING MONEY TO BUY REVOLVERS TO SHOOT POLICEMEN WITH?

A NO, NOT A WORD.

Q DID YOU HEAR HIM SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ADVISING WORKINGMEN TO JOIN THE ORDER?

A YES, THAT I HEARD. I HAD GIVEN THE INSTRUCTIONS MYSELF TO MR. ENGEL, AND INVITED THE PEOPLE TO ATTEND, TO DISCUSS THAT WE WOULD NOT WORK ANY LONGER THAN EIGHT HOURS.

Q WERE THOSE EIGHT HOURS MEETINGS, OR MEETINGS TO AGITATE THE EIGHT HOUR MOVEMENT.

A THEY WERE MOSTLY AGITATION COMMITTEES TO GET PERSONS TO JOIN THE UNION, SO THAT WHEN SPRING COMMENCED WE WOULD BE TOGETHER, AND TO ADVOCATE AND WORK ONLY EIGHT HOURS.

Q AT THIS MEETING AT WHICH MR. ENGEL SPOKE DID HE USE THESE WORDS, OR THESE WORDS IN SUBSTANCE: "I ADVISE EVERY MAN TO JOIN THE UNION TO SAVE UP $3 OR $4 TO BUY A REVOLVER, AND SHOOT EVERY POLICEMAN DOWN?

A NO.

Q DID HE SAY ANYTHING LIKE THAT?

A NO, HE DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ARMIES AT ALL.

Q DID HE USE THIS LANGUAGE, OR THIS IN SUBSTANCE, THAT EVERY BODY SHOULD SAVE UP $3 OR $4 AND BUY A REVOLVER, THAT THAT WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO SHOOT POLICMEN DOWN WITH.

A HE STOOD AS NEAR TO ME AS THIS GENTLEMAN IS SITTING HERE |POINTING TO REPORTER.|

Q DO YOU KNOW MR. WEINECKE, THE POLICEMAN, THE MAN THAT IS A POLICEMAN NOW?

A I KNOW HIM ONLY FAR ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT HE IS THE OF MR. TAYLOR, AND I CAN'T REMEMBER TO HAVE EVER SPOKEN TO HIM.

Q DID YOU SEE HIM ABOUT THE OUTER EDGE OF THE MEETING, OR ABOUT THE DOOR WHEN MR. ENGEL WAS SPEAKING?

A NO, I DIDN'T SEE HIM AT THE MEETING; I SAW HIM AT THE SALOON BUT NOT AT THE MEETING.

Q WAS IT THE SAME DAY THAT YOU SAW HIM AT THE MEETING?

A YES, THE SAME DAY---I ALWAYS SAW HIM AT THE SALOON WHEN WE HAD A MEETING THERE.

Q THE SALOON WAS IN THE SAME BUILDING, AND IN FRONT OF THE HALL, WAS IT?

A YES SIR, ---IT FRONTED THE HALL.

Q WAS IT WHILE THE MEETING WAS BEING HELD THAT YOU SAW WEINECKE IN THE SALOON, OR AFTER OR BEFORE?

A I DID NOT LOOK FOR HIM WHILST THE MEETING WAS BEING HELD, BUT SAW HIM THERE BEFORE THE MEETING AND AFTER THE MEETING.
