H. S. HOWE,
a witness called and sworn on behalf of the defendants, was examined in chief by Mr. Solomon, and testified as follows:
Q What is your name?
A H. S. Howe.
Q Where do you reside?
A I live at 13 Paulina now.
Q How long have you lived in Chicago?
A Seven years, next month.
Q What is your business?
A Undertaker.
Q How old are you?
A Almost 62 years old, lacking eight days of it.
Q Are you acquainted with one Harry L. Gilmer?
A Slightly acquinted with him.
Q You know him, do you? How long have you known him?
A Four years this summer I got acquainted with him.
Q Do you know his general reputation for truth and veracity in the neighborhood where he has resided and among the people who know him?
A yes sir.
Q Is that reputation good or bad?
A Very bad.
Q Would you believe him under oath?
A No sir.

Q Are you acquainted with Mr. Castle?
A Yes sir.
Q You know Mr. Gilmer, when he rented of Mr. Castle?
A Yes, and before that.
Q At Paulina Street?
A Yes sir.
Q How long ago was that?
A I think it is four years ago this summer--I ain't certain, but I think it is this summer four years ago.
Q Was that in your neighborhood there?
A Yes.
Q How long did you know him there consecutively?
A I knew him while he lived in a little room of Colonel's two or three or five months.
Q Did you know his associates away from that place, or his friends away from that place?
A No sir, I didn't know where he associated just then, only around there at the restaurant and the place where he associated around there.
