MICHAEL BURNS

a witness called and sworn on behalf of the People, was examined in chief by Mr. Grinnell and testified as follows:

Q What is your name?

A Michael Burns.

Q You are a police officer?

A Yes sir.

Q Did you know Mathias J. Degan in his lifetime?

A Yes sir.

Q Did you see him on the night of May 4th?

A Yes sir.

Q Where first?

A Corner of Desplaines street and the alley between Randolph--and I forget the name of the court--Waldom Place.

Q Near the station?

A Yes sir.

Q Lifted into the patrol wagon in which you were in?

A Yes sir.

Q Where did you go with him?

A County Hospital.

Q Was he alive when he was lifted in the wagon?

A To the best of my knowledge, he was alive.

Q Did he die on the way to the hospital?

A Yes sir.

Q About where?

A About Ashland Avenue and Ogden Avenue.

Q When you got to the hospital and carried him in---

A When we carried him in he was then dead.

Q That was in Cook County?

A Cook County Hospital.

Q That was in Cook County?

A Yes sir.

Q Died in Cook County, State of Illinois?

A Yes sir.

Q That was the night of May 4th, was it?

A Yes sir.
