being further examined by Mr. Grinnell, answered as follows:

Q Mr. Ludwig, I will ask you a few questions, please. You were born in Milwaukee, I believe you said, Mr. Ludwig?

A Yes sir.

Q Twenty-four years of age?

A. Twenty-seven.

Q Have you any conscientious scruples against the infliction of the death penalty in proper cases?

A. I have not, no sir.

Q Do you believe in the maintenance of the laws of the State of Illinois and the government of the United States?

A Certainly.

Q Have you any sympathy with any individual or class of individuals who have for their purpose or object the overthrow of that law by force?

A. No sir.

Q Do you now know of any reason whatever, if you are taken and sworn as a juror in this case, why you cannot determine from the proof itself the guilt or innocense of the defendants regardless of what you have heard or read, or your opinion?

A. No sir.

Q Do you know any of the defendants?

A. No sir.

Q Do you know any of the counsel upon the other side?

A No sir.

Q Have you ever talked about socialists--that is, about the principles maintained or talked for by socialists, communists

and anarchists?

A. No sir. I have never had time to talk to over. I never understood anything about it.

Q You do not know anything about these people?

A I do not, no sir.

Q Have you ever talked with any individual, any friend of yours who claimed to be a member of those organizations or people?

A. No sir.

Q You are not yourself a socialist?

A. No sir.

Q Communist or an anarchist?so far as you know?

A No sir.
