The investigators must determine if there is blood on the Lincoln assassination relics.

Preliminary phenolphthalin swab tests on the cloak and sheet indicated the likely presence of blood. Investigators at the University of Illinois at Chicago and McCrone Research Institute then developed a confirmatory micro-scale Takayama test for blood that required only a few particles of the encrusted stains. The microscopic samples were removed with special soluble tape. The results of this test are pending.

Stained tassels from the cloak attributed to Mary Todd Lincoln (CHS 1920.976).
